Description
47 Main Street in Swinton is a house dating from the late 18th century, with additions and alterations made in the 19th century. It is a symmetrical, two-storey building with three bays, featuring a single-storey wing that is recessed to the outer left and a projecting garage block to the outer right. The exterior is made of pointed and tooled sandstone rubble, with some areas having plastic repairs. The building has tooled rubble quoins, lightly droved sandstone margins, and projecting cills.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there are steps leading to a part-glazed timber panelled door that is centrally located at the ground level, topped by a plate glass fanlight. There is a single window aligned above this door on the first floor, with additional single windows in both flanking bays on both floors. The single-storey wing to the outer left also has a part-glazed timber door, while the projecting garage is located to the outer right.
The northwest (rear) elevation features a lower gabled wing that projects to the right, with an enlarged window to the left on the first floor. The northeast (side) elevation shows an attic window at the rear, above a lower neighbouring property.
The windows are timber sash and case style, with four-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and has raised stone skews. There are brick stacks at the apex on the northeast and southwest sides, along with various circular flues.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
