Description
4 The Avenue in Lauder is a detached house likely built in the early 19th century, with alterations made in the earlier to mid-19th century when an upper storey was added, along with later additions. The house is two storeys high and features a single-storey rear wing, which probably dates from the later 19th century. The principal southeast elevation is constructed of coursed whinstone rubble, while other elevations are made of rubble. The building has quoins and coped gables.
The southeast elevation has a symmetrical design with a central entrance that includes a replacement panelled timber door. There are flanking windows on each floor and an additional window above. The northwest elevation features a central stair window in the main body of the house. The gable end of the single-storey rear wing projects to the left and has a single window, with an entrance and window on the right return. A later 20th-century single-storey extension, which is harled and has a flat roof, projects forward to the right of the wing and includes an entrance with a window to the left.
On the northeast elevation, there is a blank gable end on the main body of the house where a former ground floor window has been blocked. The rear wing projects slightly forward to the right, where a former entrance has been converted into a window. The southwest elevation has a single window on the right for each floor, and a later 20th-century single-storey extension adjoins to the left, also featuring a single window.
The main body of the house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while other windows have single panes with top hoppers. The roofs are covered with grey slate, although the later 20th-century flat-roofed extension has an asphalt covering. There are rooflights on the rear pitches and rubble gable end stacks with band courses flanking the main body of the house, as well as one on the gable end of the rear wing, which has round cans.
The interior was not inspected in 1998.
