Description
27 The Green in Swinton is a cottage dated 1774, with later alterations. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure that has a two-bay wing on the outer left, forming part of a terrace that faces the green. The building is constructed from tooled sandstone rubble with droved cream sandstone dressings. The openings feature droved long and short surrounds and projecting cills.
On the southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, the main house has a centrally located boarded timber door. Above the door, there is a lintel inscribed with what appears to be “T/I F? 1774?” flanked by single windows in each of the side bays. The adjoining wing to the left has a single window in the bay to the right and a boarded timber door in the outer left bay.
The northeast elevation was not visible in 1998. The cottage features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, along with small skylights. The roof is covered with grey slate and has raised stone skews, as well as cast-iron rainwater goods. There are brick stacks at the ridge and apex, topped with circular cans.
