Description

Garth Cottage, located at 23 and 24 The Green in Swinton, is a later 18th century building that was converted into a single residence in the later 20th century, with various additions and alterations made over time. This single-storey cottage with an attic features a four-bay façade that forms the end of a terrace, facing the green. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing that creates an L-plan, originally part of No 24.

The front of the cottage is finished with painted harl, a raised base course, painted strip quoins, and painted margins. The sides and rear are constructed of heavily pointed sandstone rubble, with droved sandstone dressings.

On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a timber panelled door offset to the right of centre, accompanied by a small window to the outer right and single windows in the remaining bays to the left. A gabled dormer is positioned off-centre to the left.

The northeast (side) elevation is also four-bay. It features a boarded timber door at ground level, offset to the left of centre, with a single window aligned at the first floor and a small single window at ground level in the bay to the right. There is another single window at ground level in the outer left bay, with a blind window above it, and single windows at both floors in the outer right bay.

The southeast (rear) elevation includes a projecting gabled wing to the outer right, which has a modern window centred at ground level and a single window at the first floor, topped with an urn-shaped sandstone finial. Glazed additions front the remaining bays, which are recessed to the left, and there is a crow-stepped dormer offset to the right, also featuring a decorative sandstone finial.

The cottage predominantly has 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows on the front and sides, while the rear includes 9- and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, some of which are modern. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with grey slate, featuring raised stone skews. The building has predominantly brick ridge stacks, with a coped and rendered apex stack on the northeast side and various circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998.
