Description
Maryholm, located at 20 The Green in Swinton, is a late 18th-century building that underwent replacement and reworking in the mid to late 19th century and was subdivided in the later 20th century. It is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay structure that originally served as a library, reading room, and accommodation for the librarian, forming the end of a terrace and facing the green. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing that creates an L-plan layout. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring tooled quoins and long and short surrounds to stop-chamfered openings, as well as projecting cills.
On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a step leading to a replacement boarded timber door that is centered at the ground level, topped by a two-pane fanlight and a corniced doorpiece with panelled pilasters. There is a single window aligned with the first floor, and flanking bays contain single windows on both floors.
The southeast (rear) elevation includes a projecting wing on the outer right with a single window centered at the ground level. There is a part-glazed modern timber door in a bay that is recessed to the left, along with a single window aligned at the first floor and additional single windows on both floors in the outer left bay.
The windows feature four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate and has replacement rainwater goods, with stepped and coped apex stacks and circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1998.
