Description
Sundial House, located at 43 Main Street in Swinton, is a house dated 1826 with later additions and alterations. It is an asymmetrical two-storey, three-bay structure that is part of a terrace and features a single-storey lean-to addition on the outer right. The building is constructed from squared and snecked tooled pink sandstone rubble, with droved sandstone dressings, quoins, and long and short surrounds to the openings, as well as projecting cills.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a modern timber door that is off-set to the left of centre, with a lintel that may date from 1826. There is a single window aligned at the first floor and a single stair window in the outer left bay. Above, there is a projecting stone that may also be dated 1826. The outer right bay contains a bipartite window at ground level and a single window aligned at the first floor. Additionally, there is a square-plan sundial on a sandstone support, off-set to the right, featuring dials and metal gnomons. To the right, there is a boarded timber lean-to addition adjoining a single-storey wing at the back.
The northwest (rear) elevation was not seen in 1998. The house features plate glass timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with raised stone skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There are brick apex stacks to the northeast and southwest with circular cans.
The property is enclosed by a pointed rubble boundary wall at the front.
