Description
Rose Cottage is a mid to late 18th century thatched house located on High Street in Town Yetholm, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. It is a two-storey, four-bay structure featuring a single-storey wing to the south and a byre to the west. The front elevations are rendered, while the rear is constructed of heavily pointed whinstone rubble, with red-tiled cills.
On the east (entrance) elevation, there is a porch in the bay to the left of centre. The outer bays have tripartite windows on both floors, with the first-floor windows breaking the eaves and featuring thatched hoods. The bay to the right of centre has bipartite windows on both floors. The single-storey wing has a tripartite window, and there are bipartite windows at the angle where the wing meets the main house.
The west (rear) elevation includes a doorway with a timber lintel and a modern glazed door. The windows vary in size and distribution. The byre is located to the left, while a forge is to the right.
The house features small-pane timber casement windows and a reed-thatched roof covered with chicken wire, topped by a turf ridge. The gable-end chimneystacks are harled.
The byre is made of whinstone rubble and has timber lintels over its openings, with boarded two-leaf doors and a roof covered in purple slates. The east gable wall has been demolished and boarded over. There is also a single-storey rubble outbuilding with a corrugated-iron roof, which is reputed to have been a forge.
