Description
Cae'n y Coed Uchaf is a two-storey house with an attached byre on the right and a rear wing. It is constructed from local rubble and has a slate roof that was under restoration at the time of inspection. The house features two large square chimneys and has two window fronts facing west, with wooden casement glazing and upper windows positioned at the eaves. The doorway is roughly central and has a deep stone lintel, leading to a boarded 19th-century door.
To the right of the house is the byre, which has roughly dressed roof trusses and a loading door in the right gable where the ground rises. At the northern end, there is a single-storey rear wing that is at right angles to the main structure, built with matching materials. At the southern end, there are lean-tos at the front, which are in a ruinous state, and a roofless lean-to at the rear corner.
The layout of the house is traditionally regional, consisting of a hall with a parlour and a service room. Originally, there were chimney stairs in the hall, but the original plan was modified in the 19th century with the insertion of a central staircase. Inside, there are heavy chamfered beams and chamfered joists, along with deeply splayed window openings. The room to the right features a large fireplace with a 19th-century range, and to the right of this is a stone fireplace stair. On the upper floor, the roof is ceiled, but the feet of the trusses and some heavy purlins are visible.
