Description
43 and 45 South Street in Duns is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house that has undergone some later alterations. The exterior features dry dash with ashlar margins, a base course, and broad channelled quoin strips. Each bay on both floors has windows that are grouped towards the centre, and there is a deeply set door located between the centre and left bays. A door at the rear is situated in a single-storey screen wall to the left, while the eastern gable end is blank.
The rear elevation is irregular with three bays; the outer bays have full-height canted windows that include a cornice and blocking course, along with segmental-headed dormers. There is also a later lean-to sunroom at the centre of the rear.
The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case; the front features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the rear has 4-pane and plate glass windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building has ashlar coped skews and red brick stacks.
