Description

St Margaret's at 8-8A Kingsmeadows Road in Peebles is a pair of early 19th century semi-detached cottages that have undergone later alterations. They are two stories tall and consist of three bays. The cottages are constructed of whinstone rubble with painted ashlar margins, while No 8 features a dry-dashed finish.

No 8, known as St Margaret's, has a symmetrical design and was eclectically enhanced in the late 19th century. It is currently divided into flats with an upper entrance located at the rear. The central entrance features a pilastered doorpiece with a bracketed arched cornice that supports a pair of lions rampant holding shields with the monogram PL. Below the arch, there is a thistle and the name ST MARGARETS. The entrance is flanked by canted flat-roofed timber windows with cornices. The first-floor windows have moulded cills and shaped aprons, with panels between them displaying a thistle and rose.

The gabled return of No 8 includes a small attic window on the right. The windows are timber multi-pane casements, and the roof is covered with grey slates, featuring dry-dashed stacks. In front of the building, there is a wall with a saddleback ashlar pedestal that supports modern wrought-iron railings.

No 9, known as Fernside, is also symmetrical with regular fenestration. It has a central panelled and glazed door and a blank gabled return. The windows are timber sash and case, with both plate glass and 4-pane designs. The roof is similarly covered with grey slates and features rubble stacks. The front wall has low rubble construction with saddleback ashlar coping, and wrought-iron hoop railings are present at No 8.
