Description
Allanton Bridge, built in 1841 by R Stevenson and Sons, is a two-arched bridge that spans the Whiteadder Water, running north to south. The bridge is constructed from finely-dropped red sandstone ashlar, featuring voussoirs that continue as splayed masonry in the arches, with channelled ashlar below the band course at the impost level. It has a cornice and parapet with coping. The central pier has rounded ends with a pilaster above, and broad pilasters flanking the wide arches. A bronze plaque is located on the external wall of the west parapet, inscribed: "Allanton Bridge. Erected by Miss Boswell of Blackadder 1841. R Stevenson and Sons, engineers." The same inscription appears on an ashlar plaque on the roadside of the east parapet. There is a modern pavement on the east roadside, while sandstone stones are regularly spaced along the roadside on the west, abutting the parapet.
