Description
Holmeknowe is an early 19th-century terraced cottage located on Main Street in Allanton, with a late 19th-century additional storey and an adjoining earlier building that has undergone later alterations. The cottage is two stories high and features three bays, with an earlier single-storey, single-bay section to the north. It is constructed of stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, and there is a rubble addition to the north. The building has an eaves course.
On the west elevation facing the street, there is a partly-glazed panelled door in the center, topped with a consoled cornice. A window is located on the first floor, and there is a window on each floor of the bay to the right. The bay to the left originally housed a shopfront at ground level, featuring tripartite segmental-arched openings, with a former door in the center. To the outer left, there is a two-leaf boarded door with a timber lintel leading to the earlier building, which has been altered for use as a garage.
The east elevation was not seen in 1996, but it features a projection in the center and left bays. The windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is slate with ashlar coped skews, and there is an ashlar coped gablehead stack to the north and a brick mutual stack to the south. The garage has a pantile roof with slate easing courses and two 2-pane 19th-century skylights.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
