Description
Carter's House is a later 19th-century terraced cottage located on Main Street in Allanton. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a picturesque design and three bays. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, while the rear is made of harl-pointed rubble, which includes a modern lean-to harled addition with a glazed porch at the center and left.
On the west elevation facing the street, there is a modern panelled door in the center with a letterbox and a plate glass fanlight above it. To the right, a stone-mullioned bipartite window is present, and to the left, there is a segmental-arched pend-opening with heavily channelled ashlar framing the arch.
The east elevation features a modern lean-to addition in the center and the left bay, with a glazed porch at the center. An outer right segmental-arched pend-opening is made of droved ashlar.
The roof is adorned with ornamental slating, alternating purple slates with green fishscale slate bands. Each flanking bay has curvilinear gabled ashlar dormers with ashlar finials, segmental-arched windows, and a round-headed panel at the dormerhead. A 19th-century flush skylight is located in the center, and the building has ashlar coped skews along with brick mutual stacks.
The interior has been significantly altered in 1996. The pend features setts on the ground with rubble walls flanking it.
