Description
New Bridge, built in 1841 and widened in 1930, is a wide monumental bridge that spans the Water of Leith from west to east, replacing the Old Bridge. The structure is made of coursed sandstone ashlar, featuring polished voussoirs in the arch ring. The side parapets are constructed from rubble, with coursed and rendered sections beneath. The depressed arch springs from just above the river level and is complemented by a thickly moulded string course that is dentilled on the north side. The bridge has raised, tapered piers with advanced pedestals, which are topped by tall, open, square-plan ironwork features. The parapets are finished with saddleback coping.
