George Pape's Widows Cottages, 1 Roseburn Cliff, Edinburgh

George Pape's Widows Cottages, located at 1 Roseburn Cliff in Edinburgh, were designed by McArthy and Watson in 1894. These are single-storey and basement cottages finished with harled walls, featuring red sandstone quoins and long and short surrounds. Above the main window on the southwest elevation, there is a centered inscription, and a heraldic panel from 1676 is located on the gable of the central projecting bay at the rear, facing southeast.

The northwest entrance elevation consists of five bays. It has a pair of symmetrically placed, gabled, half-timbered bays with stairs leading to entrance doors at ground level, positioned between and on either side of the bays. The gabled bays are canted and feature three lights on the front, along with overhanging eaves.

On the southwest elevation, there are two small windows to the left at the basement level, a small window to the left at the floor above, and a larger centered window with a recessed panel for the inscription above it. A gablehead stack is also present.

The southeast elevation also has five bays, with windows in all bays on either side of the advanced gabled bay at the center. There is a wide doorway in the central bay at ground level, accompanied by a panel above.

The cottages feature small-paned timber-framed sash and case windows, a red tiled roof, banded sandstone and rubble ridge and shouldered gablehead stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
