Description

Roseburn Bar is a later 19th-century public house located at the ground floor of a tenement on the corner of Roseburn Terrace and Roseburn Street in Edinburgh. The building features three bays on each street, with an additional lounge bar facing Roseburn Street. It is constructed from coursed, polished sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, and has timber-framed plate glass windows with panelled timber aprons.

The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a single chamfered entrance bay at the corner with a depressed arch opening flanked by a pilastered surround. It includes a panelled timber entrance door and a fanlight above. A consoled, bracketed cornice projects out, topped with a curved, carved decorative pediment.

On the north elevation facing Roseburn Terrace, there are three bays with stone strips between them. The two left bays contain bipartite windows featuring large plate glass above panelled aprons with louvred vents. To the right, there is a deep-set door with a part-glazed design and a complex geometrical astragal pattern, topped with a carved, painted triangular pediment. The opening has turned classical details, and a square window to the left has panelled aprons beneath. Above all three bays, a fascia displays the words 'RETAIL, WINE MERCHANT, WHOLESALE'.

The southeast elevation facing Roseburn Street also has three bays. It features a pair of bipartite windows above panelled aprons with louvred vents on either side of a wide, blank stone central bay, with 'WHOLESALE' and 'RETAIL' inscribed above each windowed bay, respectively. The lounge bar is located in a recessed adjoining tenement further down Roseburn Street.

Inside, the bar retains its original timber structure, with a boarded panelled screen that divides the space and features turned finials, serving as a base for fluted Corinthian columns that connect to the ceiling. The area behind the bar is lined with boarded panelling and has a double tier of drinks shelves supported by turned elements. The ceiling is adorned with elaborate cornices that create a geometric grid, linking the walls and columns, while additional fluted supports and original advertising mirrors enhance the interior's character.
