Description

1 Murrayfield Avenue in Edinburgh is a two-storey and attic row of terraced Baronial houses designed by Duncan Menzies in 1893. The houses feature two bays with canted bays and crow-stepped gables, constructed from coursed polished sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. The design includes a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors that is corniced at the canted bays, and a cornice at the roofline of the left bay, with a crenellated parapet above the right canted bay. The skews are stepped, and the dormers on the left of the gables have alternate segmental and triangular pediments. The first-floor window in the left bay has margins, while the right bay corresponds to No 9.

On the principal elevation, the entrance is located in the left bay at ground level, with a doorpiece that features panelled pilasters and a circular motif flanking the moulded margins. The entrance has fluted volutes to the cornice, with narrow lights on either side of a panelled timber door topped by a rectangular fanlight. Above the entrance is a window at the first floor, and there is a dormer in the attic. The right bay includes a two-storey canted bay with a light on each face and a bipartite window in the gable, which has been converted to a single window at Nos 1 and 5.

The windows are fitted with 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the dormers have 4-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are coped, coursed polished sandstone ashlar stacks with cylindrical cans at the mutual and gablehead. The property also features low, coped, coursed sandstone rubble boundary walls along the street.
