Description

3 Coltbridge Terrace in Edinburgh is a two-storey terrace building designed by Frederick Thomas Pilkington in 1869. It consists of a pair of symmetrical five-bay blocks featuring original detailing. The exterior is made of stugged, coursed sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Notable architectural elements include a banded eaves course with corbelled eaves and saw-toothed skews on the gables. The windows have chamfered architraves, with stop-chamfered details on the central windows at ground level. The outer and central bays are adorned with colonettes and pilasters that have elaborate capitals, while the gables feature mannered masonry and rosettes, as well as stylised cross finials.

On the entrance elevation, the outer bays of each block are slightly advanced. The ground floor has three basket-arched windows, and the upper storey is chamfered. There are four-light round-arched windows with sidelights supported by stone corbels. The central ground floor features a pair of windows with naturalistic carving above the lintel, and there are panelled timber doors in the flanking bays, also with similar carving. Above, the first floor has a bipartite window with round-arched lights, and a single window in each of the flanking bays.

The building has two-pane timber sash and case glazing, a grey slate roof with coped ridge stacks topped with moulded octagonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
