Description

4 Coltbridge Terrace in Edinburgh is a late 19th-century symmetrical terrace of two-storey, Baronial-style houses featuring bay windows. The exterior is constructed from coursed sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, including a base course, eaves course, and moulded skews. Notable architectural details include corbelled rectilinear hoodmoulds raised at the center to accommodate square panels above the doors, moulded margins around the windows, castellated canted bays, skewputts, and finials on the gabled dormers.

The west (entrance) elevation consists of seven bays. Houses 4 to 8 have two bays, with a castellated canted bay on the left at ground level and a bipartite, crowstepped dormer above on the first floor. To the right at ground level, there is a panelled timber door with a rectangular fanlight above, leading to a gabled dormer on the first floor. House 2, located at the right of the block, features a single canted bay detailed similarly to the others.

The south (side) elevation has four bays with a basement, with two bays on the right advanced. It includes a bipartite window on the left at ground level, a crowstepped dormer above, and steps leading up to a panelled timber entrance door with a rectangular fanlight and hoodmould in the penultimate bay to the left at ground level. This bay also has a small, delicately carved balustrade facing the street in front of the door. Above, there is a gabled dormer on the first floor, a window in the basement to the left of the advanced section, and a window on the ground floor above. The advanced section features a dormer with a segmental pediment on the first floor and a single-storey and basement canted bay on the right, which has a window on the central face at the basement and lights on each face at ground level, along with a crowstepped bipartite dormer above.

The windows are fitted with 2-pane timber sash and case glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and features coped mutual and gablehead stacks with cylindrical and octagonal cans, as well as cast-iron rainwater goods. The property is enclosed by low coped sandstone boundary walls along the street.
