Description
Brown and Polson's Starch Works, located on Falside Road in Paisley, was designed by T G Abercrombie and completed in 1907. This building is a two-storey structure with a basement, featuring an L-shaped plan and Queen Anne architectural details. The front facade is made of brick and consists of three bays, with a porch positioned to the right. Above the round-headed arch, which bears the name "Brown and Polson Ltd" in relief, there is a segmental mutule cornice.
The ground floor windows have straight heads, while the first-floor windows are round-headed and set within recessed panels. The upper parts of the windows have small panes, and one ground floor window has been altered. A continuous impost moulding runs along the round arches on the first floor, which are accented with keystones. The spandrels feature relief ornamentation, and there is a string course above.
A relief panel depicting griffins is located above the center bay, with blind panels flanking it on either side. The return elevation facing Braids Road has seven bays, with the right side being blind. The rest of this elevation mirrors the front, incorporating alternate blind and relief panels in the frieze. The building is topped with a wooden eaves cornice, and there are two wallhead corniced brick stacks on the eastern side. The piended slate roof is complemented by a corniced brick stack and a square roof ventilator capped with a pyramidal slate top.
