Description
The building at 27 Ferguslie, Paisley, designed by architect T G Abercrombie in 1899, is a Free Renaissance style structure that formerly served as club and welfare offices. The facade on Maxwellton Road features three stories and an attic over a basement, with a central bay that includes a projecting tower made of channelled ashlar, extending up to the second-floor cornice. The entrance has an architraved doorpiece set within a round-headed surround, complete with a carved keystone and tympanum, and is topped by a moulded string course. The first floor has a tripartite window, while the second floor features a thermal window, both set in arched surrounds with a cornice above. The attic contains two oculi and is topped with a pagoda-style copper roof.
The side bays are designed with tripartite windows on each floor and bipartite dormers that have segmental pediments rising from the cornice. The roof is slate-covered with corniced end stacks. The elevation on 27 Ferguslie is two stories with an attic and consists of three bays. The round-arched door has a splayed carved surround and is flanked by candelabra on pedestals, with a corbelled balcony above. The ground floor windows are round-headed with splayed surrounds and a cill course. The center bay on the first floor features three round-headed windows, each transomed and framed by four Ionic engaged columns on pedestals, which support a carved attic that breaks through the eaves and is capped by a pediment with an oval oculus. The flanking first-floor windows are flat-headed with moulded hoods and cills. The building has wide eaves and a slate roof with skews, flat-headed dormers, and corniced end stacks.
