East And West, Garden Cottage, Moncreiffe Estate

East and West, Garden Cottage, located on the Moncreiffe Estate, is a building likely dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with a possible 18th century core. It is a good example of a gabled single storey and attic, 4-bay, L-plan estate type semi-detached house, featuring a picturesque timber porch with a rustic basket arch and finials, along with steeply-pitched dormer gablets. The cottage was originally intended to accommodate a gardener and is situated near the Orchard and Walled Garden. The exterior is constructed from snecked sandstone rubble, with some whinstone, and includes squared and snecked rubble, which may indicate later alterations. The building has contrasting stugged and droved ashlar quoins and margins.

The principal elevation faces south and consists of three symmetrical bays on the left, with a central porch that has a boarded timber door adorned with decorative ironwork hinges, and windows in the flanking bays, which feature attic windows that break the eaves. To the outer right is a taller gabled bay with a window on each floor. The rear elevation, facing north, has a jerkinhead roof above a low entrance bay.

The windows are timber sash and case, featuring 4- and 12-pane glazing patterns. The roof is covered with grey slates, some of which are graded. There are coped ashlar stacks with polygonal cans, and the eaves are deeply overhanging with exposed rafters.

The interior was not seen in 2009.
