Description
The Walled Garden and Ha-Ha at Moncreiffe Estate were built in 1726 by William McGaw, a mason from Newburgh, Fife. This large rectangular-plan walled garden, along with an adjoining part-walled orchard, is located to the east of Moncreiffe House at the base of Moncreiffe Hill, designed to benefit from a southern aspect for optimal sunlight and winter light.
The ha-ha serves as a visual link between the Walled Garden and Moncreiffe House, marking the boundary between the pleasure garden area to the east of the house and the track and more informal walks that lead north across Moncreiffe Hill.
The Walled Garden features high flat-coped rubble walls with large, roughly squared sandstone quoins, margins, and lintels. There is an early studded timber door on the west side, a decorative ironwork pedestrian gate on the south, and a broad segmentally-arched entrance on the northwest. The north wall contains remnants of greenhouses on the south elevation and a potting shed on the north.
The ha-ha is constructed of roughly coursed snecked rubble.
