Description

Earnbank House Hotel, dated 1788, is a three-storey and attic, five-bay classical house. It has been altered at least twice in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble-built red sandstone with ashlar dressings and features long and short quoins, along with a band course at the first-floor level. The central bay has an open pediment with a datestone and a Venetian window on the second floor, which is now partially obscured by a timber conservatory over the porch. The porch, dating from the mid to late 19th century, has clasping angle pilasters and a decorative fanlight that may be reused. The porch has been extended to accommodate a wide, straight flight of stairs with cast-iron balusters. To the left of the porch, there is a small curved addition providing access to the ground left room, which features an Edwardian screen. The building has sash and case windows, which are tall on the first floor. The slate roof was raised around 1900, during which shaped gables and occuli were added, along with flat-roofed dormers. At the rear, there is a semi-octagonal, late Victorian service stair projection in front of a shallow projecting central bay, with original fenestration that has been altered, likely lighting the original stair. There is also a small simplified Venetian window in the full-height attic, which was probably originally pedimented. Internally, there have been some alterations, with all chimneypieces removed except for one late 18th-century classical example now located in a second-floor bedroom.
