Description
Garden Cottage, located on the Kelburn Castle Estate in Fairlie, dates back to 1870. This single-storey and attic building was originally a gardener's cottage and is designed in a simple rustic gothic style. It features pointed-arch windows, pierced timber barge-boarding, and tall shouldered wallhead stacks. The cottage is situated to the north of the former kitchen garden at the estate and has bracketed, overhanging eaves.
Constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar margins, the building includes a basket-arch moulded surround with a timber porch supported on stone corbels. The north gable displays a carved quatrefoil plaque, dated 1870, featuring a monogram. There is a timber and glazed single-pitched porch addition on the south elevation and a harled addition on the northwest elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate and features clay cans. The windows are timber-framed with four panes of glazing.
The interior, partially observed in 2016, includes a curved staircase with metal bannisters and a scrolled timber handrail.
