17 Church Road, Stromness

17 Church Road in Stromness is an early 19th-century cottage that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan and is situated next to No 19 to the west. The cottage is built on a slope that descends to the east and has a single-storey, three-bay lean-to addition at the rear. The exterior is harled with painted cement margins around the openings.

On the south elevation, which is the principal facade, there is a replacement timber panelled door located in the central bay. Each of the flanking bays has a ground-level window, with an attic window above that breaks the eaves. The north elevation forms the south side of a courtyard at the rear and includes a window in the central bay, another window in the bay to the right, and a part-glazed timber panelled door in the bay to the left.

The east side elevation features a single-storey rubble workshop (No 15) that adjoins the blank gabled side of the cottage. The windows throughout the building are 12- and 15-pane timber sash and case types. The roof is covered with graded Caithness slates and includes a stone ridge, a flush rooflight on the north pitch, and a harled gablehead stack on the east side. There is also a re-harled and coped common ridge stack on the west side, with uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
