5 Church Road, Stromness

This is a mid to later 19th century, two-storey house with an attic and a three-bay rectangular plan. It is situated on rising ground to the north and forms the eastern end of a courtyard alongside Nos 7, 11, and 17, which are parallel to Church Road. A stone-lined storm drainage channel runs directly along the south wall. The exterior is harled with cement margins around the openings.

On the north elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a part-glazed timber panelled door at ground level in the central bay, with a window above it on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays also has a window.

The south elevation, which is the principal facade, features a small window at ground level in the central bay and a window above on the first floor, with additional windows in the flanking bays at both levels.

The east side elevation has a window positioned to the right at each floor, including the attic, with a gablehead stack above; the left side is blank.

The west side elevation has a gabled wall with a window set to the left of the gable and a tall gablehead stack above. The northwest angle is dramatically chamfered to allow access to the courtyard.

The windows are timber sash and case types, with 12- and 6-pane configurations, and there is a fixed 4-pane timber-framed window on the south elevation. The roof is covered with replaced grey slate, featuring a stone ridge, a flush rooflight on the north pitch, cement skews, coped harled gablehead stacks, plain moulded cans, and uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997.
