Description

30 Victoria Street in Stromness is a house dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later alterations and additions. This two-storey and attic, four-bay, rectangular-plan house is nearly symmetrical and forms part of the Pier Arts Centre. It features piended and gabletted dormers with finials and has a pend leading to the quay at the outer left. The exterior is painted cement-rendered and lined, with pedimented margins around the openings and strip quoins.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a timber panelled door at ground level in the bay to the right of centre, with a window above it on the first floor and a dormer window above that. Each bay flanking this has a window at both floors, including the dormers. There is a pend entrance to the outer left and a small window on the first floor above it.

The east (rear) elevation has a small window in the centre bay at each floor, with a small rooflight above. The left bay has a window at each floor, including a dormer. There is a modern glazed door at ground level in the right bay, with a window on the first floor and a dormer window above. A pend entrance is located at the outer right.

The house features two-bay timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with slate on the dormers, a red clay ridge, and scalloped red clay ridges on the dormers. Red clay finials and corniced cement-rendered stacks are present on the north and south sides, with mutual stone skews and common crowstepped skews to the southeast. The west gutter has cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative brackets.

Inside, the ground floor has been re-fitted as the Arts Centre administration base, featuring an architraved timber panelled door, timber skirting boards, and a central staircase with decorative cast-iron banisters and a timber handrail. The former drawing room on the first floor is now a library, with timber paneling.
