Description

The buildings at 84 and 86 Victoria Street, Stromness, are an earlier 19th-century row of six rectangular cottages. They have been altered later, and present a three-bay gabled front to Victoria Street, alongside number 78. The cottages are arranged as three bays (number 80), two bays (number 82), a three-over-five bay arrangement (number 84, possibly subdivided), and a final three bays (number 86), extending to the east.

The exterior finishes vary. The ground floor is cement-rendered and lined, while the first floor is harled. Numbers 78, 80, and 82 also have roughly coursed rubble with harl pointing. Number 84 is squared random rubble with harl pointing, and number 86 has a harled finish with cement cills. Windows throughout numbers 80-84 are set close under the eaves, and there are relieving arches over the ground floor bays to the right of number 84.

The western (Victoria Street) elevation features a modern door in the central bay at ground level, a window at each floor in the bay to the right, and a large picture window at ground level in the bay to the left.

The southern (entrances) elevation shows variations in door styles. Number 80 has a modern timber panelled door and a first-floor window. Number 82 has a modern timber door with a rectangular fanlight and windows in each bay. Number 84 has a timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight, a boarded door with a small light, and a bipartite timber mullion window at ground level. Number 86 has a modern part-glazed door and windows in each bay, with a blocked non-aligned window above one of the ground-floor openings.

The windows are a mix of 2-, 4-, 6- and 12-pane timber sash and case types. Roofing materials include purple and grey slates, and modern asbestos tiles on number 86. Stone ridges are present, along with cement-rendered and lined rubble corniced ridge stacks, and predominantly uPVC rainwater goods.

The interiors of the cottages have not been inspected.

A small rectangular quay, protected by a cement-rendered surrounding wall, projects to the east, alongside a rubble slipway along the northern border.
