Description
Rock House in St Abbs is an earlier to mid 19th century house that has undergone later alterations. It is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan structure with painted render and painted dressings. The building features a base course that incorporates rock in part, quoin strips, and plain margins. There is a single-storey ancillary structure with an attic located at the front.
On the southwest (entrance) elevation, there is a modern glazed door at the center, flanked by single windows at the ground level and single windows in all bays on the first floor. The southeast (side) elevation has a gable end with a single window at ground level to the left and a single window on the first floor to the right. The northeast (rear) elevation features a single window centered at ground level, another single window to the left, and single windows in all bays on the first floor, along with piended dormers on the left and right. The northwest (side) elevation has a gable end with a single window at ground level to the right and a single window on the first floor to the left.
The house has modern timber windows throughout and a slate roof, with corniced, brick-built apex stacks that have circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1999. The ancillary structure is a rectangular-plan store with a later single-storey addition to the northwest. It is harled with a whitewashed addition. The southeast (entrance) elevation of the ancillary structure has a gable end with a deep-set boarded timber door to the right and a single window in the gablehead above. The northeast (side) elevation features a square-headed opening centered at ground level and a later addition to the right, with timber sash and case windows and rooflights.
The boundary walls are rubble-coped and partially enclose a courtyard at the front.
