Description

Cliff Cottage in Murrayfield, St Abbs, is a house from the later 19th century that has seen some additions and alterations. It is a symmetrical, two-storey building with three bays and a tall single-storey addition on the side. The front features a gabled porch. The exterior is finished with whitewashed harl and painted margins, and it has projecting cills.

On the southeast elevation, the main block has a single window in the projecting porch at ground level, with a squat row of glazing above. There are single windows flanking the entrance at ground level, and above, gabled dormerheads break the eaves with single windows. The lower addition to the right has a glazed lean-to projection that is offset to the left of centre.

The southwest elevation shows a gable end with a single window on the first floor, offset to the left. The porch is recessed to the right and features a timber panelled door with a two-pane fanlight.

On the northwest elevation, the principal block has single windows in all bays at ground level, and a squat window is centred on the first floor. The lower addition to the left has a boarded timber door offset to the right.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing, and there are small rooflights. The roof is covered with grey slate and has stone-coped skews, along with corniced, brick-built apex stacks featuring various circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The garden is enclosed by coped rubble walls at the front.
