Description

Quildon Cottage, located on Back Road in Stromness, is an early 19th-century cottage that has undergone later alterations and additions. This single-storey, five-bay, L-plan asymmetrical cottage was originally a barn and features a conical grain-drying kiln at the northern end, adjacent to Quildon House at the southern end. The exterior is constructed from harl-pointed roughly coursed rubble, while the kiln is made from random rubble.

On the east (principal) elevation, there is a part-glazed modern boarded door at ground level in the central bay. To the left, a window is set low in its bay, and there is a small window at ground level in the outer right bay, with a flat-roofed window breaking the eaves above it. A stone flight of eight steps leads behind a rubble wall to a modern boarded door set high in the bay to the right of centre. Additionally, there is a small window set high in the outer right bay, and the kiln is positioned at the northeast angle.

The north (side) elevation consists of two bays, with the kiln located on the outer left side. Each bay contains a window.

The cottage features replacement timber sash and case windows with 4 and 8 panes. The roof is covered with Caithness slate, while the dormer is finished with purple Welsh slate. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
