Quildon House, Back Road, Stromness

Quildon House, located on Back Road in Stromness, is a later 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay symmetrical house. It features a one-and-a-half storey, four-bay asymmetrical stable, cartshed, and hayloft range that projects to the south, along with a further modern addition also extending southward. The exterior is cement-rendered and has long and short sandstone ashlar margins around the openings.

On the east (principal) elevation, there is a replacement timber panelled door with a rectangular fanlight at ground level in the central bay, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay has a window at both floors. The barn section includes a boarded hayloft door in the central bay, a boarded door at ground level in the left bay, and a boarded window in the outer left bay. There are also two-leaf sliding corrugated-iron doors in the outer right bay and a window at each floor in the right return. The modern addition on the outer left has blank walls.

The house features four-pane timber sash and case windows, with fixed four- and six-pane windows in the barn. The roof is covered with old Orkney grey slate, and it has stone ridges and harled coped gablehead stacks to the north and south, along with uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of a low, roughly coursed rubble wall to the east, topped with a curved sandstone ashlar cope.
