Description
Gateside is a cottage built around 1832, featuring a single storey and a near symmetrical rectangular plan with three bays. It is connected to a three-bay cottage on the right (east) and has an L-shaped barn or byre range to the west, which includes a one-and-a-half storey square kiln at the corner. There is a small single-bay store positioned at right angles to the main cottages to the south, along with a larger store that runs parallel to the main cottages to the south. The building is constructed with some harl-pointed rubble, while other areas use drystone rubble.
On the south elevation, which serves as the entrance, the bays are arranged in groups of three. The cottage on the left has a doorway that is offset to the left of centre, with a window in the left bay and a part-blocked window in the right bay. The cottage on the right features a central doorway with a window flanking each side. The north elevation at the rear is blank, with a small lean-to structure on the outer right.
The kiln range has a doorway on the south elevation of the eastern arm, with a gabled kiln at the angle and blank elevations elsewhere. The small store has a doorway offset to the left on its east elevation, while the larger store has a doorway offset to the right on its north elevation, a lean-to on the outer left of its south elevation, and a blocked doorway offset to the left in the east gable.
The cottage range retains a 4-pane timber sash and case window. The roofs of the main cottages are made of flagstone, featuring corniced rubble gablehead stacks and a tall can on the east side. The outbuildings also have flagstone roofs, some of which are covered with turf.
The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
