Description
North Ronaldsay, Nether Linnay is a mid to later 19th century cottage with later alterations and additions. It is a single-storey, four-bay rectangular-plan cottage that adjoins a single-bay barn to the northeast, along with a single-storey byre range at right angles, forming an L-plan. There is also a one-and-a-half-storey square-plan kiln at the angle. Additionally, there is a single-storey, three-bay cottage that adjoins another single-storey barn/byre to the south, creating a separate range to the west of the main L-plan complex. The building is constructed of squared rubble.
The main L-plan range features a southeast entrance elevation with two boarded doors in the central bays and a window in each of the outer left and right bays. There is an offset doorway to the left leading to the barn adjoining to the right. A large square-headed opening is present in the terminal gable of the short arm of the L to the right, and another large square-headed opening leads to a lean-to addition on the left. The southwest elevation of the short arm is blank, while the lean-to on the outer right has a centered window. The rear northwest and northeast elevations show a window in each bay of the cottage on the outer right, a boarded door with a boarded window flanking the barn in the center, and a blank lean-to projecting from the kiln on the outer left. The northeast elevation has a blank gabled wall to the kiln on the outer right, a lean-to projection from the center with a doorway to the right return, and a large square-headed doorway to the right, along with a boarded door to the left.
The detached south range has an entrance elevation with a three-bay cottage on the outer right featuring a doorway and two flanking windows. The center has a lower single-bay barn/byre with an offset doorway to the left, and there is another single-bay barn/byre on the outer right with a centered doorway. The west rear elevation is blank, while the south side elevation has a centered doorway and paired dovecote entrances to the gablehead with projecting alighting cills.
The main cottage has fixed timber-framed windows and predominantly traditional overseamed flagstone roofs, with extensive cement mortaring on the main cottage. Some areas have turf overlay, and the main cottage features harled, corniced gableheads and ridge stacks.
The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
