Description

The Old Kirk in Hollandstoun, North Ronaldsay, was built in 1812, with a belltower added around 1906, likely by T S Peace. This church features a rectangular plan with four single bays and crowstepped gables, along with a square, three-stage belltower that is crenellated, located at the east gable, and a low vestry at the west. The exterior is harled, with a corbelled string course below the crenellations of the tower.

On the east elevation, there are two leaf boarded doors to the south of a lean-to porch situated in the re-entrant angle between the gable and the tower, with a window above at the gablehead. The tower has a window at each stage, with the top window being louvered and offset to the right of the center. Each remaining face of the tower features a louvered window at the third stage. The south elevation has a window evenly placed in each of the four bays, while the north elevation is blank. The west elevation has a centered, gabled vestry that projects from the west gable, featuring a gablehead stack and a window below the main church gable.

The church has fixed timber, margin-paned windows, while the tower has four-pane timber sash and case windows, with louvered openings at the third stage. The roof is covered with graded stone tiles and has a stone ridge, along with a rubble, corniced gablehead stack with a tall can for the vestry, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the church features a fielded timber coombed ceiling and timber staircases leading to timber-panelled galleries at both the east and west ends. The interior includes tiered timber pews, with additional timber pews on the ground level, a centered carved timber octagonal pulpit on the south wall, and blind gothic arch decoration. There are cast-iron balusters with a timber handrail, brass candle sconces flanking the pulpit, and an adjustable timber bookrest with a functioning cast-iron mechanism. A timber-panelled sounding board is present, along with a centered carved timber organ on the north wall.

The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of rubble walls enclosing a rectangular churchyard to the southwest of the church. The gatepiers on the south wall are harled and corniced, with square plans, and there are timber gates.
