Description
77-83 High Street in Irvine is an earlier 19th-century tenement building that incorporates some earlier materials. It is three stories tall and has five bays, featuring shops on the ground floor and in the attic. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar with raised margins, an eaves course, a cornice, and a blocking course.
On the High Street elevation, the tenement door is located off-centre to the left, flanked by two shops in the center and right, with another shop to the left. Each bay on the first floor has a corniced window, while the second floor features smaller windows. Above the center bay, there is a wallhead gable with a pair of truncated diamond stacks.
The rear elevation consists of three bays and includes a full-height bowed stair tower in the center, which has a window on each floor and a half-conical roof. To the right, there is a later rendered addition in the re-entrant angle, with windows flanking it. A later gabled dormer is situated to the right of the tower, and there is a wallhead stack to the left.
The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, although some have been replaced with plate glass. There are also a pair of slate-hung canted dormers with piend roofs, and the roof is covered in grey slates with mutual gable stacks.
