Description
The Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, designed by engineers D & T Stevenson in 1862, features a lighthouse tower and a separate foghorn tower, which may have been built later. The lighthouse is notable for its tall, battered circular shape and is capped by a standard domed lantern. It has a plain margined doorway at the ground level and a line of five windows above.
The accompanying foghorn tower is smaller but still tall and circular, also with a battered design. It has a flat top with an encircling iron handrail and a horn. Adjacent to the lighthouse is a two-storey flat-roofed block with paired stacks over the end walls, along with lower adjoining ranges. There is also a detached, longer single-storey houseblock that is flat-roofed and features contrasting long and short window dressings. The garden area is enclosed by rubble walls and includes a standard cast-iron sundial.
