Description
Dell Mill is a mid-19th century farm steading, incorporating a large all-iron internal water wheel used to power a threshing mill. The steading likely comprises several phases of construction, principally consisting of three linked long rectangular ranges. Two ranges share a common gable, with the mill range being the one closest to the north. The range nearest the south is fronted by a third range, and short linking ranges connect the buildings at either end. The entire steading is constructed of rubble stone with slated roofs, and is single-storey with lofts.
The mill range has windows at ground and loft level, featuring small-paned glazing. West-facing timber-lintelled openings are present to the right, with one occupied by the water wheel. A lade (water channel) is brought in from the east and carried on a rubble aqueduct. J Hume’s Industrial Archaeology, vol II, 1976, p298, provides further details. The building is known locally as Dell, Muihleann Nis (Mill).
