Description
St Moluag’s Church, located in Eoropie, Lewis, is a medieval church. The Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland suggests a 14th-century date, while W.D. Simpson proposes a 12th-13th-century origin. The church fell into ruin and was restored and re-roofed under the supervision of James S. Richardson in 1911-12. It has a rectangular plan, but at the east end, there are small lean-to spaces sharing the gable wall. To the north is an intercommunicating sacristy, and to the south, a chapel with its own entrance door on its west wall; Simpson noted similarities between this plan and Norse buildings such as Gardar.
The church is built of rubble with ashlar dressings, many of which were replaced by Richardson during the restoration, including those around the entrance door. There is a single light window in each gable. It has slate roofs, similar to those found at Rodel. The church is set within a small churchyard enclosed by a plain rubble dyke, and includes a tall revivalist Celtic cross of the St John's Iona type.
A 1631 bell, believed to be the original bell from Stornoway kirk, along with other artefacts associated with the building, are now housed in the Episcopal Church in Stornoway. The church is an ecclesiastical building and is used infrequently for religious services.
