Description
Monach Lighthouse, located on the Monach Islands, was designed by engineers David and Thomas Stevenson in 1864. It features a battered, circular lighthouse tower and a two-storey, three-bay keeper's house with a flat roof at its base. The structure is made of unpainted brick, with ashlar lintels and cills, and some openings adorned with ashlar dressings and brick relieving arches. A deep ashlar base course supports the tower.
The lighthouse has seven vertically-aligned arrowslit windows, with the third-level window set in a large blinded segmental-arched opening. An additional, offset eighth window is located above, adjacent to a band course and a jettied ironwork walkway with a parapet. At the top, the lantern features diagonal astragals and a finialled domed cap.
The keeper's house connects to the base of the tower and includes a rectangular-plan house with a single-storey flat-roofed wing on the right and a roofless lean-to wing on the left. There are blocked openings on each floor. The flat-coped ashlar stacks have a full complement of polygonal cans.
Surrounding the property are coped rubble boundary walls with square-section, pyramidally-coped ashlar gatepiers.
