Description
Foghorn at St Abb's Head Lighthouse is a building opened in 1862 by David and Thomas Stevenson, with later additions and alterations.
The lighthouse features a major yet small light, consisting of a circular-plan, triangular-paned lantern topped with a finialled, hemispherical cap, sitting on a squat single-storey base that is whitewashed and designed with interlocking square and circle shapes, complete with painted coping. The interior was not seen in 1999.
Adjacent to the lighthouse is a separate single-storey, semicircular-plan foghorn block located to the north, which houses the foghorn.
To the southwest is the foghorn engine house, a single-storey, rectangular-plan structure with whitewashed harl and bull-faced sandstone dressings, some of which are painted. The southwest elevation features a segmental-arched doorway that is offset to the right. Both the southeast and northwest side elevations have segmental-arched windows in both bays. There is a doorway in a gabled addition to the right and a single window in a gabled addition to the left, with 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The roof is flat, and the interior was not seen in 1999.
Boundary walls consist of a semicircular rubble-coped, whitewashed rubble wall to the west of the lighthouse. There is a steep stair to the southwest, flanked by rubble-coped, whitewashed rubble walls, leading to a 2-leaf pedestrian gate.
