Description
The Kilmuir Old Church burial enclosure, located in Hougharry, North Uist, is a quadrangular structure surrounding a hillock, which has been extended to the west and south. The original enclosure features walls built of rubble and corniced square gatepiers at the west end, flanked by rectangular burial plots. The southern plot is constructed of coursed, squared rubble, while the other enclosures are also made of rubble with squared dressings. This site includes the burial place of John MacCodrum, a Gaelic poet, marked by a monument from around 1894, and a Clanranald enclosure near the summit that dates back to 1768. The site contains some unworked headstones, with carved monuments primarily from the 18th to 20th centuries, as well as a free-standing cross that has a central boss but damaged arms.
