Description
Holy Trinity Church and Burial Ground in Spynie features square rubble walls that enclose the site of a medieval parish church. The burial ground's walls, built in 1828, are coped and include a carriage entrance on the south side, flanked by a pair of cast-iron spearhead gates. Inside, there are various square burial enclosures, including one for the Leslie of Findrassie family, which has a possibly re-used lintel dated 1766. The burial ground contains several tomb slabs, with the earliest dated 1588, and 18th century mural monuments, including a fine Corinthianesque aedicule with an enriched frieze dated 1793. It also features tombstones from the 17th, 18th, and later periods, with the 18th century examples being of particular quality. Notably, it includes the tomb of James Ramsay Macdonald, who lived from 1866 to 1937.
