Balranald House, North Uist

Balranald House is a two-storey L-plan farmhouse located in North Uist, built around 1832 to 1833, and attributed to the architect Alexander MacKenzie of Portree. The house was renovated around 1980 and is now connected to a single-storey former outbuilding to the west. The exterior is pebbledashed with rendered margins.

The north elevation, which serves as the entrance, features a recessed bay on the right and three 12-pane sash and case windows on each floor. There is a piended off-centre porch with a door located in the re-entrant angle. Each level of the east and south elevations has two windows. The roof is piended and covered with slate, and there are single apex and wallhead stacks.

The former outbuilding, which is also piended, has a garage door cut into its short west wall and a large apex stack. The modern link to the house is designed sympathetically and includes small-paned sash windows.

The property is situated at the south end of a substantial quadrangular garden enclosure, which features rubble-built walls, coping, and square gatepiers that are corniced and topped with pyramidal caps. There is a central dividing wall with a wooden gate.
