Description
Balranald Church, located in North Uist, was designed by architect Alexander Shairp of Oban and is dated 1894 on the west gable. This T-plan Gothic church features porches in the re-entrant angles, with the southern porch forming the base of a two-stage square tower. The church is constructed from rubble with concrete dressings. It has pointed three-light gable windows, while most other openings are shouldered. The upper stage of the tower includes twin lancets on each face, recessed in a rectangular panel with corbels above, string courses, and a pyramidal roof that is enclosed by a crenellated parapet. A small gabled vestry is located on the east wall, and the church has slate roofs.
Inside, there is some simple ornamentation on the pews and a hexagonal pulpit, which features a gabled back board and flanking doors, along with a boarded ceiling. The church is enclosed by rubble-built walls and square concrete gatepiers topped with raised pyramidal caps.
