Council Offices, South Street, Elgin

The Council Offices on South Street in Elgin date from around 1820 and are a two-storey house with an attic set on a raised basement. The building features three bays, with the central bay slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. It has a Roman Doric engaged column doorpiece and a fanlight, which is accessed by a flight of steps that oversails the raised basement. The front is made of ashlar, while the flanks are constructed from coursed rubble, with polished ashlar dressings. The front windows have moulded architraves and cornices at the ground floor, and the glazing has been renewed with plate glass throughout. There is a band course at ground level and a cill band at the ground floor. The building has modern shallow round-headed dormers on the front and sides, and corniced stacks on the central spine walls, topped with a piended and platform slate roof.

Additionally, there is an early 19th-century carriage house made of coursed rubble, featuring finely tooled margins around the basket-arched entrance and at the corners. This structure also has a piended slate roof.
