Brae Birnie, 4 Mayne Road, Elgin

Brae Birnie is a substantial two-storey house built over a raised basement in 1866, located at 4 Mayne Road in Elgin. The house features a wide three-bay façade constructed from tooled ashlar with polished ashlar dressings and rubble flanks. The central entrance has a door framed by pilasters and a corniced doorpiece, accessed by a short flight of steps with an original cast-iron handrail. The door is panelled and topped with a plain fanlight. The outer advanced bays rise to the first floor and include tripartite windows, angle strips, and a bracketed cornice between the floors. The front of the house has two- and four-pane glazing, while some 12-pane glazing remains at the rear.

The roof is shallow and piended, covered with slate, and features a pair of symmetrically placed ridge chimney stacks, with six square stacks linked by a cornice. The eaves are wide and made of ashlar. At the rear, there is a low two-storey wing with modern glazing on the first floor.

Surrounding the property are high coped rubble garden walls, along with square stone gatepiers that have modern cement render and moulded pyramidal caps.
