Description

St Michael's is a substantial late 19th century rectory located on Northfield Terrace in Elgin. This two-storey and attic building is designed in an L-plan with gabled roofs and features Elizabethan architectural details. The structure is constructed from squared and snecked bull-faced sandstone rubble, accented with ashlar dressings. Notable elements include a base course, relieving arches, stone mullions and transoms, and hoodmoulds above the attic windows, along with moulded architraves.

The entrance elevation has three bays, with a broad gable over the central and right bays and a narrower gable to the left. The central entrance features double doors with a fanlight above, an ogee-carved lintel, a severe hoodmould, and a block keystone with label stops. Above the entrance, there is a single window on the first floor. To the left of the entrance, there are paired bipartite windows at ground level, with a corresponding bipartite window above. To the right of the entrance, there is a canted window with an ashlar half-piend roof at ground level and a bipartite window above. A four-light attic window spans the central and outer right bays, while a blank panel is present in the gablehead to the outer left.

On the side elevation, there are two bays under a broad gable to the left, featuring a six-light window in a rectangular projection with buttressed angles and an ashlar balcony-parapet above. To the left, there are two widely spaced windows: one bipartite window on the first floor and a French door with a window leading onto the balcony to the right. A four-light attic window is located at the centre. The rear wing extends to the right with two additional two-storey bays, each having bipartite windows at ground level and on the first floor, along with two single windows at ground level on the outer right.

The windows throughout the building are sash and case, with plate glass glazing in the lower sashes and multi-pane glazing in the upper sashes, while the attic features multi-pane casement windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the eaves overhang with plain timber barge boards. Moulded coping is present on the end and ridge stacks.

The property is complemented by ashlar coped sandstone rubble retaining walls.
