Description
188 High Street in Elgin is an earlier 19th century, two-storey and attic building designed in a classical style, featuring shopfronts on the ground floor. The main (north) elevation showcases a stone shopfront with a pair of entrances slightly off centre to the right, flanked by large windows that are currently boarded up. To the far left bay (east) is a wide flat-headed pend. The openings are adorned with moulded architraves. The first floor is finished with tooled and painted ashlar stonework, complete with a cornice and blocking course. The first floor windows are framed with raised ashlar surrounds and feature cornices. There are also two piended dormer windows.
The first floor windows consist of timber sash and case frames with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates arranged in diminishing courses, and there is a straight stone skew to the east along with a corniced chimney stack.
The rear elevation is constructed from rubble stone and includes a two-storey gabled wing, which has a stone forestair leading to a first floor entrance on the east side.
During a visit in 2018, the ground floor interior was observed, while the first floor was partially inspected. The walls have been stripped back to the stonework, and a curved stone staircase is present in the rear wing. Some moulded cornicing remains in the first floor rooms.
